Embark on an unforgettable day trip to the wild nature of Ruunaa!
This experience takes you from Lieksa to the wild river landscapes of the Ruunaa Hiking Area—no car needed. Traditional wooden boat rafting has its roots in Ruunaa’s log driving heritage and offers a globally unique adventure.
The trip begins at Lieksa railway station with a minibus ride to Ruunaan Tupa, where your guide will help you prepare for this exceptional experience. An experienced boatman will safely lead you through six rapids along the roaring Lieksanjoki River. During the trip, you’ll witness the untouched nature of North Karelia and feel the power of the water—up close, yet safely.
Along the way, you’ll stop to enjoy a wilderness-style lunch by an open fire in a traditional Lapp hut (kota). The meal includes smoked salmon, rutabaga pie (lanttukukko), Karelian pies with egg butter, bread, butter, campfire sausages, salad with dressing, traditional Finnish kotikalja (home-brewed low-alcohol beer), juice, water, and campfire-brewed coffee or tea with pastry.
The return journey by minibus from Ruunaa begins at 2:00 PM.
Trips are organized in July 2025 every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 AM to 2:45 PM.
The departure and return point is Lieksa railway station (Asema-aukio 2).
